Featuring 15 stars and 15 stripes, the Star-Spangled Banner Flag was created after Vermont and Kentucky were admitted to the union as the 14th and 15th states. This flag waved over Fort McHenry in the Baltimore Harbor during the British attack on September 13-15, 1814. As a captive of the British Navy, Francis Scott Key watched the valiant defense of Fort McHenry by the Americans and was inspired to write his "Defence of Fort M’Henry" poem.
