The International system of maritime code signal flags is a signaling system where a flag represents a letter of the alphabet or a specified maritime meaning which is used to communicate between vessels. Various methods of signaling include:
- Each code signal flag spells an alphabetic message, letter by letter
- Individual code signal flags have specific and standard meanings: such as diving support vessels raising the "A" code signal flag to indicate their inability to move from their current location because they have a diver underwater.
- One or more code signal flags form a code word whose meaning can be looked up in a code book in each vessel.
- In yacht racing and dinghy racing, code signal flags have other meanings; for example, the "P" code signal flag is used as the "preparatory" flag to indicate an imminent start, and the "S" code signal flag means "shortened course."
